What makes The Open at St Andrews so special?

At the heart of the town lies the legendary Old Course, the oldest and most famous golf course in the world. First hosting The Open Championship in 1873, St Andrews has welcomed the game's oldest major more than any other venue, creating some of golf's most unforgettable moments. With its iconic Swilcan Bridge, the challenging 'Road Hole' and its unique double greens, the Old Course remains the ultimate test of links golf and one of the most respected venues in sport.

While the Old Course is the main attraction, what makes The Open at St Andrews truly unforgettable is the complete experience. Home to the world's greatest golfers for championship week, St Andrews combines rich golfing history, world-class links golf and an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the sport. Rich in golfing history, world-class links courses and Scottish charm, St Andrews offers far more than the action inside the ropes.

Whether you're looking to tee it up on some of Scotland's finest courses, wander the historic cobbled streets, visit the R&A World Golf Museum, or explore the stunning Fife coastline, every moment away from the championship is just as memorable as those spent watching it.

Play some of Scotland's best golf courses

Why not extend your stay and experience everything Scotland has to offer? Beyond The Open, you can tee it up on some of the country's most celebrated courses, including Kingsbarns, Dumbarnie Links, Carnoustie, Crail, Lundin Links and the Castle Course, all within easy reach of St Andrews. Experience golf's oldest major

The Open has been home to over 150 years of drama, suspense and excitement as the world's best golfers go head-to-head in the oldest and most iconic championship.

Starting in 1860, at the prestigious Prestwick golf course, eight professional golfers competed against one another to determine who would succeed the Scottish Legend Allan Robertson and be crowned as the Champion Golfer.

The winner was awarded the Challenge Belt, which was worth £25 at the time. It wasn't until 1873 that the Claret Jug was presented for the first time. The original Claret Jug is now on permanent display in the clubhouse at The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.

Things to whilst in St Andrews

While St Andrews is known as the Home of Golf, there is plenty to enjoy away from the fairways. Explore the medieval streets, visit the ruins of St Andrews Cathedral and Castle, stroll along the famous West Sands Beach or discover the town's rich history at the University of St Andrews and the Wardlaw Museum.

Beyond St Andrews, Fife offers beautiful coastal scenery and charming fishing villages including Crail, Anstruther and Pittenweem, all within easy reach. You can also enjoy a tour and tasting at Kingsbarns Distillery, walk stretches of the stunning Fife Coastal Path, take a wildlife boat trip to the Isle of May, or venture to nearby Dundee to visit the award winning V&A Dundee.

Our customers say...

"Having used Golfbreaks in the past and had a fantastic experience, I used the company again for the Portrush Open. Once again, the team, the organisation around the event and the accommodation were all absolutely excellent. Communication from the original booking right through to departure from the event was very smooth. Will definitely use Golfbreaks in the future and we are very happy to highly recommend them"
