Golf in South Africa has grown in popularity in recent years thanks to its impressive display of first-class golf courses, five-star resorts, and long list of things to do off the course. What’s more, with a great climate throughout the year and each destination providing something new and different, a golf vacation to South Africa offers great choice and flexibility.

Several celebrity architects have contributed to South Africa’s rise in recent years. Rainbow Nation native and nine-time Major winner, Gary Player, boasts two of the country’s best courses in Fancourt Links Course and the Gary Player Golf & Country Club at Sun City.

Inspired by the links courses of the British Isles, The Links brings rolling, windswept terrain to Fancourt’s Garden Route estate. Uneven lies, demanding approaches, and changing conditions make it a rewarding challenge for golfers who enjoy thinking their way around a course.

The par-3 17th, known as Prayer, captures that challenge in one shot. With water to the left and thick rough to the right, finding the green is an achievement in itself.

• Arabella Golf Course

Set between the Kogelberg Mountains and Bot River Lagoon, Arabella offers scenery throughout the round. Rolling fairways and carefully placed bunkers keep you focused on your next shot, while the water becomes an increasingly important part of the test. The closing stretch is a highlight. Arabella’s par-5 18th follows the lagoon, giving you a memorable finishing hole and a final decision about how boldly to play.

Pearl Valley pairs mountain views with the strategic choices you would expect from a Jack Nicklaus design. Its broad landing areas offer room off the tee, but water, bunkers, and well-protected greens make the approach shots count.

A host of the 2009 South African Open, the course has a championship feel without asking every golfer to play from the back tees. Choose a suitable tee box and you can enjoy both the setting and the decisions that make this layout so engaging.

Leopard Creek makes the most of its remarkable setting along the Crocodile River. The Gary Player design calls for accurate shots through its bushveld landscape, with water and changes in elevation adding to the challenge.

The par-5 13th is the hole you will remember long after the round. Its elevated green looks toward Kruger National Park, where you may spot wildlife beyond the course as you play.

• Golf travel tips for a South African golf vacation:

Best time to visit: For golf around Cape Town and the Winelands, aim for October to April, when the days are generally warmer and drier. March is a particularly appealing choice if you want pleasant playing conditions after the busiest summer months.

How long to stay: Allow at least seven nights if you want to combine Cape Town with the Winelands or Garden Route. For a golf and safari vacation that also takes in Kruger, plan for around 10 to 14 nights so you have time to enjoy each stop.

Our top tip: Build in a day away from the course. A Winelands tasting, a drive along the Garden Route, or a morning game drive can make the trip feel like much more than a series of rounds.
