An event like no other
The Ryder Cup is now regarded as one of the greatest sporting events on the calendar. Samuel Ryder, from whom the cup gets its name, was inspired by the 1926 match at Wentworth when Abe Mitchell teamed up with George Duncan to defeat the great Open champions, James Barnes and Walter Hagen. In the bar after the game, Ryder declared ‘We must do this again’. The rest is history…
When officially introduced in 1927, the two teams competing were originally Great Britain and the United States. The US got off to an impressive start, winning the first five Ryder Cup competitions. This dominance continued both before and after the Second World War, which led to the inclusion of European players in 1979, where the playing field became a lot more even.
In recent years, the Ryder Cup has brought to our screens some of the most memorable displays in the cup’s history. Many of you will have witnessed the ‘Miracle of Medinah’ in 2012, the United States' brilliant display at Hazeltine in 2016, and Europe’s success at Le Golf National in 2018. Needless to say, the trend over the past decade has been a back-and-forth tussle with each team winning on their home soil.
Can Steve Stricker help bring home the Cup for the first back-to-back home win since 1983? Or will Europe successfully defend their title from 2018 at Le Golf National? Whatever the odds, the stage is set for a truly incredible experience at Whistling Straits.
Ryder Cup 2021 Venue - Whistling Straits
The Straits Course at Whistling Straits is known as one of the most dramatic and picturesque courses in the US. Situated in Wisconsin and bordering the beautiful Lake Michigan, the views across the water are simply magnificent and promise to be an amazing backdrop to the 2021 Ryder Cup.
Despite its natural ruggedness, the course was only opened for play in 1998, and since then has gone from strength-to-strength, having hosted the PGA Championship on four occasions (2004, 2007, 2010, 2015) - Most will know the course for Jason Day’s memorable first major win when he fended off an in-form Jordan Spieth by three shots.
Pete Dye's design is critically acclaimed and known to be a modern classic, so it came as no great surprise when the layout was called upon to host in 2021. The risk and reward elements of this superb course will be perfect for matchplay, the course itself is impacted by strong winds with eight holes hugging the Lake Michigan shoreline with the added difficulty of tight fairways, which will be sure to keep both teams honest.

Things to do in Milwaukee
Nestled within a shallow valley, on Lake Michigan’s western shore, lies this beautiful, charming city. From its spectacular scenery, stunning architecture, culture, and diversity, Downtown Milwaukee is the perfect place to be based during your stay for the Ryder Cup.
Boasting a rich lively atmosphere, it has been crowned the ‘city of festivals’, but it’s most recognized as the place for great beer and cheese in the Midwestern US. Take a trip to the Historic Third Ward or East Downtown and see for yourself the 19th-century Germanic influence on the sumptuous local food and drink. Stroll along the local cheese markets, hear stories of the German settlement, and try a sip of traditionally brewed beer!
Thanks to its mix of Mexican, Asian, and African American populations, visitors staying in the area can experience a huge variety of entertainment and nightlife in the evening after the game. Whether you’re on the hunt for a quiet spot to dine or a fun-filled night of music and entertainment, Milwaukee has everything you need! As well as great nightlife, the city boasts a rich colorful history and art scene. Check out the famous Harley-Davidson museum for a true taste of classic American culture, or the Milwaukee art museum.
