1. The Old Course Golf Club

Par: 72 | Architect: Frank Pennick | Founded: 1969 | Type: Parkland | Rating: 4.7

Often referred to as the "Grande Dame" of Algarve golf, the Old Course Vilamoura is one of Portugal's most iconic layouts. Mature umbrella pines frame tight, gently undulating fairways, demanding accuracy off the tee and precision on approach shots. Its classic design has stood the test of time, and its peaceful setting within a pine forest creates a serene golf experience.

2. Quinta do Lago, South Course

Par: 72 | Architect: William F. Mitchell | Architect: 1974 | Type: Parkland | Rating: 4.6

Set within the protected Ria Formosa nature reserve, the South Course at Quinta do Lago has hosted the Portuguese Open eight times throughout its history. Renovations in 2020/21 have improved sustainability, playability, and conditioning, bringing the course up to modern standards while preserving its classic character.

Being a touch over 7000 yards from the back tees, longer hitters will be rewarded with two good shots on the par 5s. However, wayward shots will be punished as the carefully placed pine trees mean accurate tee shots are required to card a good score.

Quinta do Lago also houses two more fantastic courses, the North Course and the Laranjal Course.

South Course, Quinta do Lago

Key features:

  • Ranked the no.3 course in the Algarve by Top 100 Golf Courses
  • Frequent host of European Tour events
  • Lush surroundings within a natural reserve

Travel tips:

"Quinta do Lago Golf is without a doubt one of the finest golf resorts in Europe. Featuring three world-class golf courses, all of which are unique and different, this should definitely be on the bucket list of every golfer. From the well-manicured course condition, the attention to detail at Quinta do Lago is 2nd to none."
