The Open 2026 venue - Royal Birkdale
Founded in 1889, the Royal Birkdale Golf Club needs no introduction. Amongst the many iconic courses along the Northwest Coast, Royal Birkdale stands out, being a perfect example of links golf. Measuring 6690 yards, Royal Birkdale is always a challenge, particularly when the coastal wind blows through the dunes.
In preparation for The Open, the iconic Royal Birkdale has announced a series of course changes and the addition of a new par 3, to elevate the challenge for the world's best at The Open 2026.
Royal Birkdale has partnered with Tom Mackenzie from the world-renowned Mackenzie & Ebert Golf Course Architects to carry out these changes and create the new par 3 which will play as their new 15th hole. Along with this new addition to the course, many holes are being redesigned, including the 5th, 7th and 14th.
Create your bespoke package to England's Golf Coast
Being located at the heart of England's Golf Coast, Southport is known worldwide as one of the very best destinations for an English golf tour.
The lively town is right amongst these courses and is usually abuzz with golfers from across the globe here to play on some of the region’s most notable courses such as The Open host, Royal Birkdale, Hillside and Southport & Ainsdale.
However, golfers shouldn’t overlook some of the lesser-known courses, which may not have the renown of the other courses but are no less because of it. Courses like Formby, Hesketh and Fairhaven are all examples of those which may not receive the footfall of the others, yet possibly benefit as a result, as they are always in fantastic condition most of the year.
Our dedicated Tournaments Team will be on-site throughout your stay, ensuring every detail is handled for a smooth, stress-free tournament experience.

Experience golf's oldest major
The Open has been home to over 150 years of drama, suspense and excitement as the world's best golfers go head-to-head in the oldest and most iconic championship. Starting in 1860, at the prestigious Prestwick golf course, eight professional golfers competed against one another to determine who would succeed the Scottish Legend Allan Robertson and be crowned as the Champion Golfer.
The winner was awarded the Challenge Belt, which was worth £25 at the time. It wasn't until 1873 that the Claret Jug was presented for the first time. The original Claret Jug is now on permanent display in the clubhouse at The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.
"Having used Golfbreaks in the past and had a fantastic experience, I used the company again for the Portrush Open. Once again, the team, the organisation around the event and the accommodation were all absolutely excellent. Communication from the original booking right through to departure from the event was very smooth. Will definitely use Golfbreaks in the future and we are very happy to highly recommend them"
