The North Course, formerly known as the Champions Course, is the flagship layout at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa - a course steeped in PGA Tour history and famous for hosting some of golf’s most prestigious events. Originally designed by Dick Wilson and Joe Lee, and later reimagined by acclaimed architect Gil Hanse, it embodies the perfect blend of tradition, challenge, and Californian beauty.
With over 30 PGA Tour events held here, including the Tournament of Champions, the Match Play Championship, and the Women’s Kia Classic, this course is a proven test of elite golf, offering immaculate conditioning and a strategic layout that rewards both power and precision.
Course overview
Set across rolling parkland framed by mature trees, gentle hills, and glistening water hazards, the North Course is a masterclass in classic golf design. Hanse’s renovation modernised the course with wider fairways, recontoured greens, and artfully placed bunkers, all while preserving its timeless flow.
At over 7,100 yards, the course demands accuracy off the tee and deft touch around the greens. Water features come into play on several holes, and strategically positioned bunkers protect the immaculate putting surfaces. The layout offers a true championship challenge for low-handicap players while remaining playable and enjoyable for resort guests from the forward tees.
The par-3s are particularly striking, with elevated greens and desert backdrops, while the par-5s offer opportunities for risk-reward heroics. Every hole delivers a new perspective, blending lush fairways with the golden hues of Southern California’s landscape.
Signature Holes
-
Hole 18 (Par 4): The finishing hole is a classic tournament test - a long, water-lined fairway leading to a green guarded by bunkers and an amphitheatre backdrop that’s witnessed countless dramatic finishes. Precision and nerve are essential.
-
Hole 3 (Par 5): A genuine risk-reward challenge where longer hitters can reach in two, but must carry water and avoid cleverly placed bunkers around the green.
-
Hole 11 (Par 3): Known for its elevated tee and postcard-perfect setting, this short hole is deceptively tough, with swirling breezes adding to the challenge.
Every hole feels distinctly Californian - a showcase of sunshine golf at its finest, combining strategic depth with natural elegance.
