Tralee Golf Club
Killarney, Ireland
Tralee Golf Club overview
Golf has been played in Tralee since 1896, initially on a 9-hole golf course a short distance from the current site. In 1984 Arnold Palmer was brought in to build a new 18-hole links course that has gone onto receive global praise.
The clubhouse is modern in design, the pro-shop is well-stocked, and the golf academy is home to state-of-the-art coaching technology along with a grass driving range that can accommodate 25 golfers at one time. The restaurant and bar offer great views across the golf course and out to the Atlantic Ocean.
Tralee Golf Course overview
Situated on a strip of land hemmed in on three sides by the Atlantic Ocean approximately 20 minutes from the town of Tralee, this Arnold Palmer design offers stunning landscapes and is widely considered as Palmer’s masterpiece.
Although less than 40 years old, Tralee Golf Club fits perfectly into the collection of top links courses in South West Ireland and is a must-play for all visitors. It is believed that once completed, Arnold Palmer coined the statement “I designed the first nine but surely God designed the back nine” which is hard to disagree with once you have experienced Tralee for yourself.
The par-72 layout has two contrasting nines, the front being played on quite flat but elevated land with holes 10 to 18 meandering through massive sand dunes and up to raised, plateau-like greens protected by ravines. The back nine at Tralee is often regarded as the best stretch of holes in Ireland, a perfect blend of challenge, variety and awesome views.
The incredible surroundings are reason enough to make the journey to Tralee, offering one of the best links golf experiences in the country.
Signature Holes
The par-3, 3rd hole is a magnificent short hole. Measuring almost 200 yards from the tournament tees it offers stunning views over the Atlantic with a ruined 12th-century castle standing behind the green. Anything hit to the right on this hole will simply be swallowed by the rocks and sea.
Did You Know?
The 17th hole at Tralee is named ‘Ryan’s Daughter’ as a homage to the Oscar-winning movie of the same name from 1970 which used the dramatic Tralee coastline in the film.
