There’s something undeniably special about Loch Lomond—the largest freshwater loch in the UK by surface area, nestled within Scotland’s first National Park. It's a place where natural beauty and luxury blend seamlessly, drawing visitors from around the globe. My recent visit to this Scottish gem was nothing short of magical, with the iconic Cameron House Hotel providing the perfect base.
Joined by my partner Elaine, who somehow always seems to be around when I visit the world’s most incredible venues, we checked into Cameron House for a one-night stay that included dinner, breakfast, and a round of golf at the stunning Carrick Golf Course.
Steeped in history dating back to the 15th century, Cameron House is now a luxurious five-star hotel with 208 rooms and suites, plus 115 lodges, cottages, and apartments. The attention to detail throughout the resort is second to none, from loch-facing balconies (complete with rock salt tubs for winter safety!) to the tartan-clad concierge who greets guests like royalty.
The hotel’s facilities are exceptional, offering everything you could want for a luxury golf holiday from water sports, falconry, off-road driving and a private cinema, to a vibrant marina featuring La Vista Italian restaurant and a gourmet deli. And let's not forget the “Wee Demon,” a fun 9-hole course ideal for a casual round.
Cameron House
We kicked off the evening with a drink at The Great Scots Bar, boasting over 250 whiskies and a terrace with panoramic views of the loch, before heading to the Cameron Grill for dinner. The meal was outstanding: scallops and lamb chops for me, oysters and baked cod for Elaine. She declared it one of the best meals she’s ever had and she’s a seasoned global foodie!
The night wrapped up with a lively visit to The Tavern, the hotel’s own pub complete with live sports, a pool table, and a great casual menu. The warm atmosphere and friendly staff, including a surprise reunion with an old colleague, made it all the more memorable.
Cameron House hotel room and view
We set out early the next morning to The Carrick, just a short drive from Cameron House. The course offers a unique experience, its front nine in the lowlands, and the back nine in the highlands. After recent drainage improvements, the course was in superb condition with firm fairways and fast greens.
Highlights included the 4th hole, a challenging par 4 that skirts water the entire way; the 10th, offering breathtaking views over the loch; and the iconic 14th, a downhill par 3 that’s as picturesque as it is memorable. We even halved it in birdies!
The Carrick Course and Bee garden
Sustainability is also front and centre at The Carrick, with features a “Bee Garden” and award-winning eco initiatives. The clubhouse is modern and welcoming, and while the spa was under renovation, I can vouch from past experience - it’s a real treat!
Breakfast & farewell Breakfast back at the Cameron Grill didn’t disappoint, Scottish classics, fresh pastries, fruits, cheeses, and juices galore. Sadly, it was soon time to check out, though a quick stop in the boutique shop helped ease the goodbye.
From its rich history and luxurious offerings to unforgettable golf and dining, Cameron House and The Carrick provide a truly world-class experience. Whether for a romantic escape, a group golf trip, or a Scottish weekend getaway, this is one Scottish destination that delivers on every level.
Top tip: Book early, especially in peak months, and don’t skip The Great Scots Bar’s whisky flight, or that signature 14th hole photo opp! Cameron House is luxury done right, and worth every penny.
