The Albatros Course at Le Golf National
Paris, France
The Albatros Course overview
Par: 72 | Yardage: 7,331 yards | Designer: Hubert Chesneau & Robert Von Hagge | Opened: 1990
The Albatros Course is one of Europe’s most iconic championship layouts and the centrepiece of Le Golf National. Purpose-built to host elite professional tournaments, it has staged the 2018 Ryder Cup, multiple Open de France events and the 2024 Olympic Games.
A modern stadium-style design, the Albatros blends links-inspired shaping with dramatic water hazards and natural spectator mounding. It is a strategic and demanding test that rewards precision, confident ball striking and intelligent course management. While undeniably challenging from the back tees, multiple tee options make it an unforgettable experience for a range of handicaps.
Course overview
The 2026 redesign has meant that several holes have been reimagined to refine their strategic balance, alongside green modifications and improved drainage and turf systems. Sustainability is a key focus, with agronomic upgrades designed to enhance year-round conditioning and reduce environmental impact.
The Albatros is defined by its bold shaping, expansive bunkering and ever-present water hazards. Tee shots require commitment and careful placement, with many holes designed to favour a specific side of the fairway to open the best angle into the greens.
Approach play is where the course truly reveals its championship pedigree. Large, undulating greens are heavily protected by deep bunkers and lakes that punish any lapse in accuracy. Distance control is critical, particularly on approach shots played over water into elevated or subtly contoured putting surfaces.
The course builds in intensity throughout the round, culminating in one of the most dramatic finishing stretches in European golf. Risk-and-reward decisions are a constant theme, especially over the closing holes where water is both a visual feature and a genuine hazard.
Signature hole
The par-4 18th hole provides a spectacular finish. Played towards a green guarded by water along the left and front, the hole sits within a natural amphitheatre that creates a true stadium atmosphere. Precision from the tee is essential to find the fairway, while the approach demands nerve and commitment. With water in play and spectators historically lining the banks, it is a fitting stage for dramatic finishes.
Post round
After your round, the clubhouse at Le Golf National offers panoramic views across the finishing holes, the perfect setting to reflect on your experience. Golfers can enjoy classic French cuisine and refreshments while overlooking the same closing stretch that has crowned Ryder Cup heroes.
If you desire, refine your short game on the brilliant 'Heritage' practise area.
Our view
The Albatros Course is a bucket-list experience for any golfer. The 2026 redesign ensures it will continue to evolve while preserving the drama and championship pedigree that define it. Demanding yet unforgettable, it remains one of the finest and most memorable rounds in continental Europe.
