Slaley Hall Priestman Course overview

Location: Slaley, Northumberland | Style: Rolling parkland / moorland blend | Par: 72 | Length (back tees): ~6,951 yards | Opened: 1999 | Designer: Neil Coles

Set on the western side of the Slaley Hall golf estate, the Priestman Course was crafted in 1999 under the guidance of PGA Chairman Neil Coles. Over time it has matured into a distinguished, full-length championship layout. It spans roughly 280 acres, climbing to higher ground with sweeping views across the Tyne Valley and even to the Cheviot Hills in Scotland on clear days.

Though younger than its sibling (the Hunting Course), Priestman has already played host to European Tour and senior events, cementing its place among Northumberland’s foremost courses.

Course overview

The Priestman Course offers an open feel and forgiveness off the tee. Yet don’t let that mislead you - the design incorporates undulating fairways, strategic water hazards, streams, and well-placed bunkers, ensuring precision and course management are rewarded.

The terrain undulates subtly, shifting elevation and sightlines in ways that keep every hole interesting. The fairways are generally generous, but penal rough and tricky bunker placements raise the stakes on approach shots. Wind, especially on elevated holes, can also become a factor.

Measuring approximately 6,951 yards from the back tees, this par-72 course balances challenge with playability, ensuring an enjoyable experience for both low-handicap players and casual visitors.

Signature Holes

While the Priestman layout has many memorable moments, two holes commonly draw attention:

  • Hole 9 (par-4): A beautifully framed hole that leads into the turn. It offers a strategic tee shot choice and a second shot that demands accuracy over water or bunker trouble.
  • Hole 18 (par-5): Often decisive, this closing hole gives players a final opportunity to swing their score. It is long, dynamic, and balances risk vs. reward - a fitting end to the round.

These holes pair aesthetic appeal with tactical depth, making them favourites among regulars and visitors alike.
