Innisbrook Copperhead Course overview
Location: Palm Harbor, Florida | Style: Parkland | Par: 71 | Designer: Larry Packard | Opened: 1974
The Copperhead Course is the crown jewel of the four layouts at Innisbrook Resort. Its twisting fairways, rolling terrain, and tightly framed corridors defy the stereotype of flat Florida golf. Since 2000, it has hosted the PGA Tour’s Valspar Championship, and is known for its unforgiving closing stretch - the famed “Snake Pit”.
In 2015, the course underwent a comprehensive renovation aimed at restoring Packard’s original vision - rebuilding greens, reshaping bunkers, upgrading irrigation, and expanding tee boxes.
Today, Copperhead challenges players with strategic angles, tree-lined landing zones, subtly contoured greens, and water that comes into play on many holes.
Signature Holes
Hole 14 (Par-5, ~590 yd) — “Packard’s Double Dogleg”
This is widely recognized as the signature hole. It begins with a dogleg left, heavily guarded by trees, and then turns right toward a protected green with bunkers to the left and water short right. Modern players often treat it as a three-shot hole, placing a premium on positioning over raw length.
Did You Know?
The Copperhead’s closing stretch is nicknamed “The Snake Pit” - three of the toughest finishing holes on the PGA Tour.
Beginning with the dogleg-right 16th (Moccasin), followed by the long 17th (Rattler) par-3, and ending with the uphill 18th (Copperhead), this trio tests even the world’s best under pressure. A bronze snake statue marks the entrance to the 16th tee, warning golfers of the challenge ahead.
Over the years, the Snake Pit has decided countless tournaments, cementing Copperhead’s reputation as one of the Tour’s sternest tests.
