Walton Heath Old Course overview

Style: Heathland

The Old Course at Walton Heath Golf Club is one of the finest examples of heathland golf in England and holds a revered place in the game’s history. Designed by Herbert Fowler in 1904, the Old Course has long been celebrated for its strategic brilliance, natural beauty, and timeless layout.

Ranked among the best inland courses in the UK, its classic heathland character combines an inland links feel with firm, fast-running fairways, natural bunkering, and an ever-present sea of purple heather that demands precision.

Accuracy off the tee is essential here; stray drives can quickly be swallowed by thick heather or deep bunkers, making recovery difficult.

Signature Holes

The 3rd hole is one of the most picturesque and challenging par 3s in English golf. Measuring around 200 yards, it requires a precise long iron or hybrid shot to a narrow green flanked by heather and bunkers. Wind often plays a factor, making club selection critical.

Did You Know?

Walton Heath's Old Course was the venue for the 1981 Ryder Cup, where arguably the greatest American team in history - featuring Nicklaus, Watson, and Trevino - defeated Europe decisively.
