Valhalla Golf Club
USA
Overview
Host venue of the 2028 Solheim Cup Location: Louisville, Kentucky | Style: Championship / Parkland | Length: just over 7,600 yards | Par: 71 | Founded: 1986
Valhalla Golf Club is one of America’s most celebrated championship venues. Designed by 18-time major champion Jack Nicklaus and opened for play in 1986, the course occupies more than 500 acres of rolling Kentucky countryside just outside Louisville.
Valhalla has built an extraordinary tournament résumé in a relatively short history. It has staged four PGA Championships, in 1996, 2000, 2014 and 2024, as well as the 2008 Ryder Cup, and will welcome the world’s leading female golfers when it hosts the 2028 Solheim Cup. The event will make Valhalla one of only four venues to have hosted both the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup.
The Jack Nicklaus design combines broad, rolling fairways with dramatic elevation changes, strategically positioned bunkers, thick Kentucky bluegrass rough and challenging green complexes. Floyd’s Fork winds through the property and comes into play throughout the round, adding both visual appeal and strategic risk. The two nines offer contrasting character, with the more open front nine giving way to a tree-lined and increasingly dramatic closing stretch.
Extensive renovations have ensured Valhalla remains equipped for modern championship golf. Ahead of the 2014 PGA Championship, all 18 greens were rebuilt, bunkering was enhanced, the irrigation system upgraded and the practice range expanded.
Course Highlights
- Solheim Cup venue – Valhalla will host the 2028 Solheim Cup, adding one of women’s golf’s biggest events to an already exceptional championship résumé.
- Major championship pedigree – Four PGA Championships and the 2008 Ryder Cup have been staged here, with Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele among the major winners crowned at Valhalla.
- Jack Nicklaus design – Wide fairways, substantial bunkering, undulating greens and strategically positioned hazards create a demanding but visually impressive championship test.
- Floyd’s Fork – The stream meanders through the property and influences several holes, rewarding careful course management and accurate ball striking.
Signature Holes
One of Valhalla’s most memorable holes is the 13th, “The Limestone Hole.” This short par-4 measures 355 yards from the back tees and is defined by a spectacular elevated green built almost 20 feet above the surrounding terrain on huge limestone boulders.
Six bunkers guard the left side of the driving zone, placing a premium on position from the tee. The approach is even more dramatic, with the green almost completely surrounded by water and little margin for error. It is a visually striking risk-and-reward hole that can produce anything from birdie to a costly mistake.
The drama continues at the 18th, “Photo Finish,” a 570-yard par-5 featuring a split fairway and a vast boomerang-shaped green. A strong drive can give longer hitters the opportunity to attack in two, creating the potential for huge swings late in a match or tournament.
