Royal Óbidos Golf Course is a striking championship layout set high above the Atlantic on Portugal’s Silver Coast. Designed by the legendary Seve Ballesteros, the course blends natural beauty with strategic design, offering a memorable test framed by sweeping ocean and lagoon views.

The opening holes wind through gently undulating terrain before the course builds towards a dramatic coastal stretch, where elevation changes and exposed conditions add both visual impact and challenge. While generous from the tee in places, Royal Óbidos demands thoughtful positioning to set up the best angles into its large, contoured greens, a hallmark of Seve’s design philosophy.

Golf course overview

Royal Óbidos rewards strategic play and careful course management. Tee shots must be shaped to avoid well-placed bunkers and natural hazards, while approaches require accuracy to find the correct sections of the expansive greens.

Water features come into play on several holes, most notably around the middle of the round, adding both aesthetic appeal and a genuine scoring challenge. The greens are consistently well presented and subtly contoured, placing emphasis on distance control and confident putting.

The routing takes full advantage of the elevated site, with panoramic views across the Atlantic Ocean and Óbidos Lagoon enhancing the experience throughout. The back nine, in particular, delivers a strong and memorable finish in an exposed coastal setting.

Signature hole

The par-5 5th is often considered the standout hole. Playing downhill towards the lagoon, it offers a classic risk-and-reward opportunity. Longer hitters may be tempted to go for the green in two, but water and strategic bunkering demand precision on both the lay-up and approach, making decision-making key.
