Indiana course, Desert Springs overview
Par: 72 | Yardage: 7,015 | Designer: Peter McEvoy | Founded: 2001
The Indiana Course at Desert Springs offers a distinctive desert-style golfing experience in the heart of Almería. Designed by Ryder Cup legend Peter McEvoy, it blends dramatic landscape features with thoughtful strategy, delivering a memorable test that is both visually striking and tactically engaging.
Set against the backdrop of the Almanzora Valley, the course features wide fairways framed by rocky outcrops, dry riverbeds and vibrant desert planting. While the generous landing areas offer encouragement from the tee, strategic bunkering and water features ensure accuracy and intelligent positioning remain key throughout the round.
The greens are expansive and subtly contoured, rewarding confident putting and precise approaches. With its bold design and scenic surroundings, the Indiana Course provides a unique alternative to traditional parkland or resort layouts.
Golf course overview
Peter McEvoy’s design embraces the natural desert terrain, incorporating dramatic elevation changes and arid waste areas to create a course that is both strategic and visually impressive. Tee shots are often inviting, but careful placement is essential to avoid desert scrub, deep bunkers and strategically positioned water hazards.
Water comes into play on several holes, most notably on the back-nine, where lakes and streams add both aesthetic appeal and a demanding finishing touch to approaches. The bunkering is bold and penal, particularly greenside, placing an emphasis on distance control and thoughtful shot selection.
Despite its desert character, the course remains fair and playable, rewarding course management and patience over sheer power. It is a layout that challenges lower handicappers while remaining enjoyable and manageable for mid- to higher-handicap golfers.
Signature hole
The 18th is a brilliant hole and has a signature element to it. A fairly short par-4 where it is up to you as to how much of the dog-leg you want to cut off, before approaching a green fully surrounded by water and the pressure of the clubhouse watching from behind the hole.
Post round
After the round, golfers can unwind at the Desert Springs clubhouse, where the Terrace provides brilliant views of golfers coming in to finish their rounds. With quality dining and a relaxed atmosphere, it’s the perfect setting to reflect on the day’s play.
Our view
The Indiana Course offers something genuinely different within European resort golf. Its desert aesthetic, strategic design and dramatic setting combine to create a round that is both memorable and rewarding. Ideal for groups seeking variety and a touch of theatre, it stands out as one of Spain’s most distinctive resort courses.
