Overview

The Machrie Links golf course, set on Scotland’s Isle of Islay, is a stunning links layout renowned for its natural terrain and coastal drama.

Originally designed by Willie Campbell in 1891, the course was completely redesigned by DJ Russell in 2018 to combine classic links elements with modern playability. The result is a course that maintains the wild charm of dune-crossing holes and sweeping sea views while eliminating many of the blind shots that once defined it.

Stretching over 7,000 yards from the back tees, The Machrie offers a strategic challenge for golfers of all levels. Revetted bunkers, subtly contoured greens, wide fairways, and variable coastal winds demand creativity and control. The course flows seamlessly through natural dune landscapes, offering variety and beauty at every turn.

Complementing the main course are outstanding practice areas, including a six-hole par-3 “Wee Course,” a Hebrides-shaped putting green, and a full driving range.

Signature Holes

One of The Machrie’s signature holes is the par-4 12th, known as "The Battery." Playing from an elevated tee, the hole offers a breathtaking view of the Atlantic and the surrounding dunes. A well-placed tee shot must navigate bunkers and a gently bending fairway that runs parallel to the beach.

The approach demands precision to find a narrow green guarded by natural run-offs and deep bunkers, making it both a scenic highlight and a true test of shot-making skill.
