The Old Petty
at Cabot Highlands

Highlands & Inverness, Scotland

Cabot Highlands Old Petty overview

A coastal links masterpiece crafted by Tom Doak, designed to compliment the prestigious Castle Stuart. The course unfolds naturally through undulating dunes and open grassland. Every hole is shaped to embrace the natural contours of the land, blending seamlessly with the coastline and offering panoramic sea views that shift with the light and tide.

The design balances drama and calm, with the historic Old Petty Church serving as a landmark to the course alongside the 400-year-old Castle Stuart.

Together, these elements create a golfing journey that feels timeless, rooted deeply in Scotland's landscape and heritage.

Golf course overview

The course is designed for walking, emphasizing strategy, shot-making and the influence of the wind. Each hole is designed to give its own unique feel, from short par-3's to long par-4's that trace the prominent estuary.

You will get views of the infamous castle on the third hole, despite then being visible for most of the round it is the internal views that are most the striking, a testament to the design. A difference to the its sister course, where the sea is the focus for the majority of the round.

Measuring in at over 7000 yards off the black tees the Old Petty is by no means short, with all but three of the par-4's at over 400-yards. Make sure to brace yourself for the 600-yard par-5 10th as well, a true beast.

Signature holes

Although every hole could make a case as a signature hole, given the brilliant design of the course, the 16th is simply stunning.

A par-4 which requires a big carry over the estuary before hitting into a green surrounded by danger. The definition of a hole that requires precision and course management!

Post round

After a round on the Old Petty course players can unwind while taking in the tranquil Highland scenery that surrounds the course.

The clubhouse offers warm hospitality and panoramic views over the Moray Firth, where the sun sets behind Castle Stuart’s silhouette. It’s the perfect spot to relive the day’s shots, share stories with fellow golfers, and reflect on a course that blends challenge, beauty, and serenity in equal measure.
