East Course overview

Location: Kirknewton, Scotland | Style: Championship parkland | Length: 6,684 yards | Par: 73 | Designer: James Braid | Opened: 1927

Ranked the no.23 course in Edinburgh & Lothians by Top 100 Golf Courses

The East Course at Dalmahoy is the headline act of the resort: a big, championship-calibre parkland test that combines width from the tee with the kind of scale and subtlety that can still expose every weakness in a golfer’s game. Known on site as “The Beast”, it has hosted the Solheim Cup, the Scottish PGA Championship, and the Scottish Seniors Open, securing its status as one of the stronger resort courses within easy reach of Edinburgh.

Originally designed by James Braid and later renovated in 2005, the East Course now stretches to 7,400 yards from the championship tees, though it is more commonly set at a still-substantial 6,684 yards for everyday resort and competition play. It is a course that feels playable on first glance, yet steadily reveals its championship qualities over the round.

Course highlights

  • Championship pedigree, having hosted the Solheim Cup, Scottish PGA Championship, and Scottish Seniors Open.
  • James Braid design set in rolling, wooded parkland with views towards the Pentland Hills.
  • Renovated in 2005, with two newer holes through the trees at 13 and 14 now counted among the course’s signature stretches.
  • Championship length from the back tees, yet still regularly presented at 6,684 yards for resort and member play.

Signature Holes

While there is no single signature hole, the 13th and 14th new addition holes have received significant praise following a renovation in 2005, with tight fairways and hazards at every turn.

Clubhouse & amenities

The East Course benefits from the same full-service resort set-up as the West, which is one of Dalmahoy’s biggest advantages for travelling golfers. Practice facilities include:

  • 12-bay floodlit driving range
  • 9-hole putting green
  • Short-game area
  • 9-hole pitch-and-putt course

Golf operations are supported by changing facilities, lockers, and showers within the leisure club.

For overnight guests, Dalmahoy pairs championship golf with a four-star country-estate stay. The hotel has 215 rooms and suites, restaurants and bars, indoor pool and leisure club facilities. The result is a classic Edinburgh golf break base: serious golf during the day and an easy transition into dining, drinks, or recovery afterwards.

Did You Know?

The Solheim Cup was held at Dalmhoy Country Club in 1992, where the Europe team comfortably took home the trophy. Nationally, the East course has also hosted the Scottish Seniors Open and Scottish PGA Championships.

Our experts say...

“The East Course at Dalmahoy is a true championship test with an impressive tournament pedigree. Wide fairways offer encouragement from the tee, but the course quickly reveals its bite through strong bunkering, large greens, and its demanding length."
