The Lake Course overview

Location: Hensol, Wales | Style: Parkland/Lakeside | Length: 6,436 yards | Par: 72 | Designer: Peter Johnson | Founded: 1994

The Lake Course is the Vale Resort’s original championship layout, a scenic par-72 parkland course shaped around water and Welsh countryside. Designed by Peter Johnson and opened in 1994, it measures 6,436 yards from the back tees and offers a more compact but highly engaging contrast to the longer Wales National.

True to its name, the Lake Course brings water into play on 12 of its 18 holes, creating a round that rewards accuracy, nerve, and course management. The setting has matured beautifully over time, with the course now forming part of a rich local wildlife habitat and providing a picturesque golf-break experience close to Cardiff.

Course highlights

  • Water features on 12 of the 18 holes, making accuracy a key part of the challenge.
  • Played by notable names including Ian Woosnam, Bernard Gallacher and Gareth Bale.
  • The course is dominated by a 20-acre lake.

Our experts say...

"The Lake Course offers a completely different but equally enjoyable experience. It’s more forgiving off the tee, but the presence of water on so many holes keeps you fully engaged from start to finish. Precision and course management are key here, and the risk-reward element - especially around the island green - makes it a fantastic complement to the Wales National. It’s scenic, strategic, and immensely playable."
