River Course overview
The River Course at Blackwolf Run is widely regarded as one of Pete Dye’s finest and most demanding designs. Set along the winding Sheboygan River, the course features a rugged, forested landscape that Dye used to full advantage, crafting holes that require precision, strategy, and nerve.
The River Course is known for its dramatic shot values, including over water, narrow fairways framed by mature trees, and contoured greens that reward accurate approach play.
Playing to over 7,300 yards from the championship tees, The River Course offers a true test of golf and is regularly ranked among the top public courses in the United States. It served as part of the composite course used during the 1998 and 2012 U.S. Women’s Opens, further solidifying its status as a championship venue.
Despite its difficulty, the River Course provides multiple tee boxes to accommodate various skill levels, ensuring that all players can experience its beauty and challenge. Its combination of strategic design and breathtaking riverside scenery make it a standout in Pete Dye’s legendary portfolio.
Signature Holes
One of the most scenic holes on the course, the 8th is a mid-length par 3 with a tee shot over the river to a green nestled into a hillside.
The narrow green is protected by bunkers and steep slopes, and swirling winds from the river can complicate club selection. It's a beautiful but intimidating shot that rewards accuracy and penalizes any lapse in concentration.
