Travel tips for golfers visiting Mexico

  • Best time to visit: November to April is generally the best time for a golf holiday in Mexico, with warm temperatures, lower humidity and less rainfall than during the summer months.
  • Best areas to stay: Cancun and Playa del Carmen are two of the main areas for golf holidays, offering beachfront resorts and easy access to several leading courses.
  • Top tip: Look for a golf and resort combination, with many courses located close to major resorts so you can easily split your time between the course, beach and pool.
  • Course variety: Mexico offers plenty of variety, from jungle-lined fairways and mangrove wetlands to lagoons, limestone features and views towards the Caribbean Sea.
  • Booking tip: When choosing your golf holiday, consider how close your resort is to the courses you want to play, particularly if you are planning to include several rounds during your stay.

Some of Mexico’s best golf courses include:

Gran Coyote Golf | Playa del Carmen Architect: Nick Price | Opened: 2011 | Length: Over 7,000 yards

Around 40 miles south of Cancun, Gran Coyote Golf winds through the tropical landscape of Playa del Carmen. Nick Price’s design combines generous stretches of fairway with strategically placed hazards and well-maintained greens, creating an enjoyable test in a distinctive coastal jungle setting.

Course tip: With more than 7,000 yards to cover from the back tees, choosing the right set of tees can make a big difference to your round.

Mayakoba El Camaleon Golf Club | Riviera Maya Architect: Greg Norman | Par: 72 | Length: Over 7,000 yards

The Mayakoba El Camaleon Golf Club is a Greg Norman design that moves through several contrasting landscapes. Golfers encounter tropical Mayan jungle, mangrove wetlands and stretches close to the Caribbean coastline, giving each section of the course its own character.

One of its most recognisable features arrives immediately on the opening hole, where the large Devil’s Mouth bunker creates an early strategic decision from the tee.

Course tip: Think carefully about club selection on the 1st. The Devil’s Mouth bunker occupies a sizeable portion of the fairway and can quickly punish an aggressive opening drive.

Riviera Maya Golf Club | Riviera Maya Par: 72 | Length: 7,272 yards

Riviera Maya Golf Cluboffers a championship layout shaped by the natural landscape of the region. The course passes through dense Mayan jungle, limestone quarry features, lagoons and freshwater caves, providing plenty of visual variety throughout the round.

The practice facilities are another highlight, including a 300-yard driving range where golfers can warm up before heading onto the course.

Good to know: Arrive with enough time to make use of the practice facilities before your round, particularly if it is your first time playing in Mexico’s tropical conditions.

Iberostar Cancun Golf Club | Cancun Architect: Isao Aoki | Par: 72 | Length: 6,735 yards

Located at the Iberostar Cancun Golf Club and less than 10 miles from Cancun International Airport, Iberostar Cancun Golf Club is a convenient option for golfers staying in Cancun’s main resort area.

The Isao Aoki-designed course covers around 150 acres of subtropical landscape, with views towards the Caribbean Sea and Nichupté Lagoon. At 6,735 yards, the layout provides an enjoyable test for a range of abilities while making the most of its coastal setting.

Good to know: Staying at Iberostar Selection Cancun gives you the convenience of having the course directly on site, making it easy to fit golf around the rest of your holiday.

Our experts say...

“Mexico is a great winter-sun golf destination, with November through to April generally offering the best conditions for a golf holiday. Expect warm temperatures, plenty of sunshine and lower humidity across many of the main resort areas. Summer is hotter and can bring more humidity and rainfall, particularly around the Caribbean coast, but it can also be a good time to find better value on hotels and golf.”
