Golf's oldest major
For over 150 years, the world's best golfers have battled it out against the challenge of links golf at The Open, the oldest and most historic major championship. Starting in 1860, eight professional golfers assembled at Prestwick to determine who would be the Champion Golfer.
The winner was to receive the Challenge Belt, which at the time was worth £25. It wasn't until 1873 that the Claret Jug was presented for the first time. The original Claret Jug is now on permanent display at the clubhouse at The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.
Royal Troon Golf Club
Royal Troon has currently hosted 9 Open Championships, most recently in 2016 which turned out to be one of the most exciting majors in recent history. Henrik Stenson came out on top over Phil Mickleson in an epic final round, named ‘Duel in the Sun II’.
Royal Troon was founded in 1878 and has since been regarded as one of the best clubs in the UK. The club is home to two excellent courses, the Old Course and Portland Course, both offering a great challenge. The Old Course is the more famous of the two and is ranked among the top golf courses in Scotland.
The famous postage stamp 8th hole at Troon provides a stern test despite measuring little over 100 yards. The beautiful land in which Royal Troon is set provides beautiful rolling fairways that are interspersed with gorse and broom on many holes, creating a tough but enjoyable test of golf on both courses.

Very few golf locations in the world offer the quality and quantity of links courses as Ayrshire, situated in the southwest corner of Scotland. In addition to Royal Troon, the area is acclaimed for its major role in Open Championship history with Prestwick and Turnberry.
Prestwick Golf Club is perhaps the most historic golf course in history, with 24-Open Championship to its name, as well as the year which started it all – 1860. The course hasn’t quite kept up with modern standards of the game, but it is one of Scotland’s leading courses nonetheless.
The Ailsa Course at Turnberry is another historic venue and the setting for ‘The Duel in the Sun’, an epic battle between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson at The 106th Open in 1977. This is one of the most memorable final days in Open history and the iconic links course is extremely accessible to visiting golfers.
Other great courses in the area includes former Scottish Open venue, Dundonald Links, Western Gailes, and Gailes Links.
"We had a wonderful time at The Open and would like to say how much we appreciated the excellent organisation of the Golf Breaks team both beforehand and during the tournament itself."
