Stayed at Penina Hotel for 4 nights including 3 rounds of golf on the Championship course between Monday 7th to Friday 11th January.
First thing to say is this is not a high end hotel....and..... having some randomly dressed bloke stood waiting to open the main entrance door as you come and go does not turn a generally tired looking, distinctly average hotel into a self declared luxury one.
HOTEL ROOM: 5/10 and would not recommend as a 5 star hotel
Generally my room looked outdated and tired, with tarnished brass light fittings and ironmongery and dark brown woodwork and floor, though definitely was clean.
"Mountain view" means facing north and no sunshine on your balcony at any time, happy days! .... be careful if booking.
All bars were closed by midnight. The barman tells me the bar is normally open until 1am. I arrived back to hotel on Tuesday night at 00:10 and not a drink to be had. So much for customer care.
No bottle opener in room but they will gladly send room service to open a bottle out of mini bar at exorbitant prices, and they will not leave the opener!!??. Take your own bottle opener!
Headboard made of unpadded wood and is impossible to get comfy when sitting up in bed.
No tea cup in the room or kettle, just a complicated coffee maker with espresso sized miniscule cups. Had to get waiter at breakfast to allow me to borrow a large cup to use in my room.
There was adequate charging points.
Buffet Breakfast: 4/10
Buffet breakfast was poor in my opinion and so called hot food was generally not kept hot..... Bacon was streaky, overcooked, cold and had those inedible, hard, white bits that I haven't seen for years. Sausages were tasteless, shrivelled and also cold. Black pudding was wafer thin and luke warm at best. Eggs were also cold and had sat for who knows how long.
Getting the WiFi up and running was a bit of a pain and the signal disappeared two or three times, but that might have been the fault of my Samsung 7.... the receptionist said!!
Television is a smart tv so casting options from phone or tablet are available if you are tech savvy enough. No English tv channels other than BBC World and Sky News International.
Videos are available at €15!!! a go, for 24h, choice of 29 titles, all seemed quite current.
The tv was not working as I awoke on Wednesday morning so I reported it at 09:30 as I went for breakfast. Returned to room at 6pm that evening and still not working. When I chivvied up reception they did send somebody immediately and he fixed the problem.
Radio Service: 1/10
1 Channel available.... BBC World News.
The Bathroom: 9/10
Very smart, no negative comments and nice bath robe available
Room Cleaning Service: 8/10
On my last night the lift I was using broke down so trapping me in the lift for 35 minutes, causing me to miss my taxi into Alvor, whilst sustaining associated cancellation charges, and almost ruined my evening before it had started
I was disappointed that nobody other than the lift engineers were in attendance as I eventually exited the lift to check I was ok.
10 minutes later as I awaited my replacement taxi in reception, the General Manager approached me, duly apologised and offered to send "something" up to my room by way of a gesture of compensation. I declined on the basis I was leaving early next morning.
At check out the following day, not only was there no offer of discount but the hotel tried to charge me for 15 euros for minibar items I hadn't consumed, and actually charged me 4 euro for a small beer I had earlier charged to my room........5 star hotel ??
I don't think so!
