The Ardgowan is a charming family-run hotel with a great selection of recently refurbished rooms, a fantastic restaurant that has tables outside to relax in during the summertime. The hotel is ideally located for enjoying the excellent array of bars and restaurants available in St Andrews, all within walking distance.

Golf Courses

Located less than 200 yards from the 18th green of the Old Course, The Ardgowan Hotel provides easy access to all the courses in and around St Andrews. We recommend the New Course and Jubilee Course in town with the likes of Carnoustie Golf Links, Kingsbarns Golf Links and Crail Golfing Society all within a short drive.

Accommodation

The Ardgowan is a Scottish Tourist Board 3-star accommodation, centrally located within walking distance of the University of St Andrews, British Golf Museum and the world-famous Old Course.

The Ardgowan was designed in 1847 by the famous Scottish architect, George Rae. It offers 29 comfortable private bedrooms covering two adjoining Georgian townhouses.

There are also a further 7 rooms in their annex – The Pilmour Hotel which comes under the umbrella of The Ardgowan. All bedrooms offer tea/coffee facilities, digital television/radio, free Wi-Fi, telephone, and hairdryer. A same-day laundry service is also available.

Restaurant & Bars

Playfairs Restaurant is just off North Street on a South-facing terrace and enjoys an excellent reputation for top class, freshly prepared food. All menus display a Scottish twist and the dishes celebrate the best in local and seasonal produce.

Playfair's Bar in The Pilmour Hotel is an ideal place to relax and watch sport, with seven large screens, friendly staff and a good bar menu.

Location

The Ardgowan Hotel is located right in the heart of St Andrews on the East Coast of Scotland just yards from the 18th green of the Old Course. For international access we recommend either Edinburgh Airport which is 1hour 30mins drive away or Glasgow Airport (a further 30 mins drive).

Championship Course

The Championship Course at Carnoustie is one of Scotland’s iconic courses and regular host of The Open since 1931. A tough test, this course is regarded as the most difficult Open Championship course.

Moray Old Course

The Old Course at Moray GC, located an hour east of Inverness and widely considered to be one of the best links courses in Scotland, is a true hidden gem and tribute to the artistry of Old Tom Morris.

Castle Stuart Golf Course

Castle Stuart is a fantastic layout and wonderful addition to the Scottish Highlands. Located on the shores of Moray Firth just east of Inverness and with stunning panoramic views.

Championship Course

The Championship Course at Royal Dornoch is located in the beautiful Highlands of Scotland and consistently ranked amongst the top 5 courses in the world. Tough to get to but well worth the effort.

Leven Links Golf Course

Leven Links is one of the oldest and most historical golf clubs in the world. Located just 10 miles south of St Andrews with wonderful views out to Largo Bay. Ranked top 50 in Scotland.

Lundin Golf Course

Lundin Links, located just 30 minutes south of St Andrews and dating back to 1868, is originally an Old Tom Morris design then James Braid. An authentic links that ranks amongst Scotland’s top 35.

Kingsbarns Golf Course

Situated on the east coast of Scotland and just 7 miles from St Andrews, Kingsbarns, is widely regarded as one of the UK’s best courses, certainly a must-play when visiting the area of Fife.

Elie Golf Course

Elie Golf Club dates back to 1832 and is an outstanding links gem that effortlessly combines undulating fairways with large, fast greens and magnificent views over the Firth of Forth.

Balcomie Links

A great Old Tom Morris design dating back over 100 years, this is links golf as it used to be played with many of the original hole routings still in play today. A short layout but nonetheless a true test.

Jubilee Course

Perhaps the most underrated of the St Andrews courses, the Jubilee is full of character and variety. Originally opened in 1897, it underwent changes in 1988 to elevate it to championship standard.

New Course

Often overshadowed by the Old Course, the New Course is a very enjoyable links layout that will test all parts of your game. Opened in 1895 and therefore one of the oldest ‘new’ courses in the world.

Dumbarnie Links

Just minutes from St Andrews, this rare piece of land is home to Dumbarnie Links golf course which has a mile and a half of sea frontage with panoramic views over the Firth of Forth.

West Links

Founded in 1832, the West Links at North Berwick is ranked top 5 in Scotland and top 50 in the world. Located very conveniently just east of Edinburgh along Scotland’s Golf Coast.

Old Course

The world’s oldest and most iconic course, host to numerous Open Championships and regarded as the spiritual home of golf. Playing the Old Course is on every golfer’s bucket list.

Castle Course

A tough links course that opened in 2008, making the Castle Course the latest addition to the St Andrews Links portfolio of courses. Superb coastal views along this interesting clifftop layout.

Gullane No. 1

No.1 at Gullane is an Open Championship Final Qualifying Course and multiple host of the European Tour’s Scottish Open, with beautiful views across the Firth of Forth.
