More about the British Masters

The British Masters was long a blockbuster tournament on the European Tour schedule from its inception in 1946 up until 2008. Throughout the 1980’s, the world’s very best golfers would travel far and wide to battle it out. Foreign favourites such as Seve Ballesteros, Lee Trevino and Bernhard Langer succeeded on some of Britain’s finest courses. Local heroes also ran riot with the likes of Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam lifting the trophy in the past.

Around the turn of the millennium, the big names dried out and so did the prestige of the tournament. In 2008, attempts to find a new sponsor of the event were unsuccessful and the British Masters was removed from the European Tour schedule.

Backed by Sky Sports, the event made an ambitious return to Woburn in 2015 hosted by Ian Poulter. Back on the European Tour, the event now follows a similar format to other popular tournaments, with a fun ‘Hero Challenge’ on the Tuesday night under the lights, complimented by music, pyrotechnics and a big-name host, with Tommy Fleetwood taking the reins in 2019.

With record attendance at Close House in 2017 and an impressive field at Walton Heath in 2018, Tommy Fleetwood has the perfect platform to host the best British Masters to date!

Hillside Golf Club... the perfect host

Following the stern parkland test at Close House, and the heathland challenges of Walton Heath, it only seems natural to move the British Masters to a true links classic – and that’s exactly what Hillside is. Known for being Royal Birkdale’s next-door neighbor and one of the best courses not to have hosted the Open Championship, now is Hillside’s opportunity to host on the big stage.

Set amidst large dunes and tall pine trees, Hillside is a stunning links course that will provide a fantastic setting for the 2019 British Masters. Once described by Greg Norman as having the best back nines in the UK, the winds and challenges of Hillside are known by all in the golf industry. The layout of the course is split into two-halves. The front nine plays along a flat surface by the railway line and the back nine weaves in and out of dramatic and wild sand dunes. But both nine holes promise to pave the way for incredible European Tour memories.
