The Champion Course is the flagship layout at PGA National Resort and one of the best courses in Florida. Best known as the long-time host of the PGA Tour’s Honda Classic and the 1983 Ryder Cup. It has built a global reputation for its demanding design, immaculate conditioning and tournament pedigree.
Set across gently rolling parkland, the course winds through lakes, mature trees and carefully sculpted bunkering with water hazards influencing strategy on a significant number of holes, its design stands out as one of the best in Florida.
Greens are quick, firm and heavily contoured, placing a premium on approach play and confident putting. With its championship atmosphere and unmistakable sense of occasion, The Champion Course delivers a true test of golf and is a highlight of any South Florida golf tour.
Golf course overview
Originally designed by George and Tom Fazio and later reinvented by Jack Nicklaus, the course blends classic parkland aesthetics with modern championship demands. Fairways are well defined and often framed by water, while bunkers are strategically placed to punish wayward shots and dictate lines from the tee.
Approach shots must be accurate, as many greens are protected by water or deep bunkering and feature subtle slopes that test distance control. Conditioning is consistently excellent, ensuring the course plays as intended year-round.
Signature Holes
Home to the legendary Bear Trap, a three-hole stretch covering holes 15, 16 and 17 that is regarded as one of the toughest finishing sequences on the PGA TOUR. Two tricky par-3s sandwiched by the demanding par-4 16th can make or break your round.
Post round
After tackling the most challenging course on-site at PGA National, golfers can relax at the resort’s expansive clubhouse, offering multiple dining options, bars and outdoor terraces overlooking the course. The professional shop is well stocked with premium brands, while the wider resort facilities provide plenty of ways to unwind after a demanding round.
Our view
A true championship test with global pedigree, The Champion Course delivers a demanding but hugely rewarding round. We recommend it highly to confident golfers looking to challenge their game against one of Florida's toughest courses. It offers immaculate conditioning, iconic holes and an unforgettable tournament atmosphere.
