Gleneagles King's Course overview

Location: Auchterarder, Perthshire, Scotland | Style: Heathland / Moorland | Length: 6,741 yards | Par: 70 | Designer: James Braid | Founded: 1919 | Rank: 18th best golf course in Scotland

Widely regarded as one of Scotland’s finest inland layouts, The King’s Course at Gleneagles is a timeless classic that showcases the genius of five-time Open Champion and renowned architect James Braid. Opened in 1919, this historic course winds gracefully through heather-clad hills and natural moorland, offering a traditional test that has stood the test of time for over a century, and has also hosted the Scottish Open.

Unlike its modern counterpart, the King’s Course is defined by its natural routing and subtle strategic challenges. Fairways twist and turn through rolling terrain, while well-placed bunkering and firm, fast greens demand precision and thoughtful shot-making. Elevated tees provide sweeping views across the Perthshire countryside, creating a memorable sense of space and tranquillity throughout the round.

Course highlights

  • Historic design – Crafted by legendary architect James Braid and opened in 1919
  • Natural terrain – Routed across heather, gorse, and rolling moorland with minimal earth movement
  • Strategic challenge – Emphasis on placement, angles, and intelligent shot selection
  • Panoramic views – Elevated holes offer stunning vistas of the Ochil Hills and surrounding countryside
  • Championship heritage – Consistently ranked among Scotland’s top inland courses

Signature Holes

A strong favourite for many at the Kings Course is the par three, Fifth hole. Standing at only 161 yards, 'Het Girdle' means hot griddle as the green is lengthy and narrow with a upward slope from front to back. A known tip is to leave it short, having an uphill putt to salvage whatever you can.

Guests of the King’s Course benefit from the world-class facilities at Gleneagles Resort. Practice areas include a driving range, short game zones, and the renowned PGA National Academy. The elegant clubhouse and resort provide luxurious locker rooms, a fully stocked pro shop, and a variety of dining options, all delivered with five-star service.

Post Round

After your round, unwind in the comfort of Gleneagles’ award-winning resort. From relaxed bars to fine dining restaurants, as well as a luxurious spa and wellness centre, the post-round experience is every bit as memorable as the golf itself.
