Passion, patriotism, and golfing perfection; there are plenty of reasons to attend a Solheim Cup. However, the event is particularly special at home.

With the next instalment taking place at one of our most popular holiday destinations on the Costa del Sol, let us give you a few extra reasons to head down to Spain in September!

The most coveted trophy in women’s golf

Whilst the thrill of winning a Major championship is tough to beat, the raw emotion that comes with lifting the Solheim Cup is unparalleled in the women’s game. Sporting the iconic blue and yellow on the final day, our team goes to battle with their American counterparts, desperate to emulate past European icons such as Dame Laura Davies and Annika Sörenstam.

Who can forget the last time the cup was competed for on European soil, with Suzann Pettersen putting the exclamation point on a stellar career with a one-up victory to ensure the trophy stayed on this side of the Atlantic?!

Speaking of which…

Home team advantage

Competing in the Solheim Cup is one thing, winning is another. Although the US lead the overall series 10-7, Europe have won five of their seven cups on home turf. The added local knowledge has seen our women claim victories in Scotland, Ireland, and Sweden – and they are looking to add Spain to that list in 2023!

Finca Cortesin Golf Club - host venue of the Solheim Cup 2023

The course at Finca Cortesin should favour our side, with more strategy required than many of the ‘bomb & gauge’ type layouts preferred by the Americans. One of the beauties of the Solheim Cup is that the home captain has the final say over the course setup, so expect Captain Pettersen to make a few tweaks which might (hopefully) favour our side!

Showcase your patriotism

And if the home course advantage isn’t enough, then hopefully the support coming from the fans will get us over the line! The Solheim Cup is well known for some fabulous matching outfits from the crowds – blue and yellow, of course – as well as some catchy songs and plenty of chants of Ole, Ole, Ole!

There are not too many places within world golf that you can get away with being quite so boisterous, so take advantage of the opportunity to loudly and colourfully cheer the Europeans to victory.

Explore the Costa del Sol

This is the first time that the Solheim Cup has headed down to Southern Europe, and we couldn’t think of anywhere better for some late-September sunshine. The Costa del Sol continues to be a favourite of our customers, and you’ll be in great company for the week, with thousands of golfers already likely to be in the region, taking on some of Spain’s top golf courses.

Emulate the pros

One of the biggest perks when the Solheim Cup comes to Europe is the ability to add on additional destinations to your trip, and there’s very few regions with as many golfing options as the Costa del Sol.

Whether you want to take on other big-name courses such as Valderrama or Sotogrande, or you’re looking for the perfect place to relax after the excitement of the tournament – the Costa del Sol has you covered. Some of our favourite resorts here include, La Cala, Lauro Golf Resort, The Westin La Quinta, and SO/ Sotogrande, but speak to our sales experts who will be able to help tailor the perfect trip for your itinerary.

Flight time & travel costs

One of the biggest advantages of a home Solheim Cup is the comparatively cheaper travel and accommodation options when compared to watching the team in the USA. Flights down to the Costa del Sol are in abundance, with Malaga the preferred local airport for most. Most major UK airports offer routes to the region, meaning transfer times and costs are also reduced on both ends of your journey.

SO/ Sotogrande

Additionally, given the long history of looking after travelling groups from the UK in the area, there are hotel options to accommodate every group – from five-star decadence to smaller affordable options for groups looking to stick to a budget.

Despite a 10-7 deficit in total Solheim Cups, team Europe have won the last two in a row. Our women are looking to make it a hattrick in 2023, something twice done by the US team, but never by our side.

We’ve got a great chance with some local names from GB & Ireland leading the way, including; Leona Maguire, Charley Hull, and Georgia Hall. Although, they’ll have to be on their game if they want to hold off the likes of Lexi Thompson, Danielle Kang, Megan Khang, and the Korda Sisters!
