Golf's oldest major
For over 150 years, the world's best golfers have battled it out against the challenge of links golf at The Open, the oldest and most international Championship. Starting in 1860, eight professional golfers assembled at Prestwick to determine who would be the Champion Golfer.
The winner was to receive the Challenge Belt, which at the time was worth £25. It wasn't until 1873 that the Claret Jug was presented for the first time. The original Claret Jug is now on permanent display at the clubhouse at The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.
Open winners range from historic champions such as Willie Park Jr and Snr, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, to more recent legends such as Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy - who have both won at Hoylake. This only adds to the allure and history of The Open Championship.
The Open 2023 host - Royal Liverpool Golf Club
The Open is famous for being hosted at historic links courses and 2023 is no different. Royal Liverpool Golf Club (otherwise known as Hoylake) dates back to 1869 and has previously hosted The Open on 12 occasions. The course is located on the edge of the Dee Shores and against the backdrop of the distant Welsh hills, which is a beautiful location to experience the history and traditions of the game.
Home of The 143rd Open, when Rory McIlroy famously claimed his only Open Championship, the course at Royal Liverpool Golf Club is critically acclaimed throughout the world of golf. Champion Golfers at Royal Liverpool also include Peter Thomson, Bobby Jones and of course Tiger Woods, who won his first major tournament win here after the death of his father in 2006.
Although it may appear to look flat and benign at first, don't let this be deceiving. In recent years golf architect Donald Steel has been commissioned, with great success, to restore and elevate the course to modern championship standards. The challenging layout will be remembered as golfers walking in the footsteps of golfing legends.

"I would like to say what a brilliant time me and my friends had in Belfast. The girls on the Golfbreaks desk were very welcoming and couldn't do enough to help you and very hard working. The golf was amazing and with Shane Lowry winning was the icing on the cake. I would definitely recommend using golf breaks and will definitely be using them again in the near future. "
