Portstewart Golf Club overview
Portstewart Golf Club was founded in 1894 and is home to three links golf courses. The Strand and The Riverside are the two premier courses with The Old being much shorter at less than 5000 yards and par-64.
Situated on Northern Ireland’s north coast close to Royal Portrush, we highly recommend including Portstewart when visiting this area, and in particular, The Strand Course which many rank as just one rung below the Royal masterpieces at County Down and Portrush. The new clubhouse was built in 2009 and the European Tour’s Irish Open hosted here in 2017.
Golf Courses
The two courses that we recommend playing are The Strand, which is of championship links standard with one of the best opening nine holes in golf, and The Riverside which although shorter at less than 6000 yards is beautiful, with holes meandering along the banks of the River Bann. Why not warm up first on The Riverside before then taking on the mighty Strand!

The Strand Course
The Strand Course at Portstewart is a great mix of the old and the new, dating back to the early 1900s and more recently updated by Des Giffin to bring into play the virgin sand dune range called ‘Thirsty Hollow’. Regularly ranked third behind the Royals at County Down and Portrush in terms of best courses in Northern Ireland, the Strand is defined by its undulating dunes, runoff pot bunkers, rolling fairways, and difficult manicured greens. The views are magnificent too.
The Riverside Course
Golf at Portstewart Golf Club dates back to 1894 and has evolved into the magnificent set-up we see today with three links courses. The Strand tends to grab all the attention and is ranked third best in Northern Ireland however we highly recommend warming up on the shorter yet beautiful Riverside Course, with holes that meander along the banks of the River Bann.
