El Campeon Course overview
Ranked the 67th best course in Florida by Top 100 Golf Courses in 2026 Location: Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida | Style: Parkland | Length: 7,037 yards | Par: 72
Opened in 1917 and designed by George O’Neil, El Campeón is one of Florida’s oldest and most characterful golf courses. Originally created as part of the region’s early development, the course has retained its classic design principles while earning a reputation as one of Central Florida’s standout layouts.
What truly sets El Campeón apart is its rare elevation changes, with rolling fairways and rises of up to 85 feet creating a playing experience unlike most courses in the area. Mature pine and magnolia trees frame the fairways, while sloping greens and natural movement reward accurate driving and thoughtful approach play, making it a memorable and rewarding test for confident golfers looking for something a bit different on their Florida golf vacation.
Course highlights
- Historic championship layout – One of Florida’s oldest courses, offering classic architecture and a true sense of golfing heritage.
- Rare elevation changes – Significant undulation adds variety and challenge rarely found on Florida courses.
- Tree-lined fairways – Mature pines and magnolias reward accuracy and thoughtful shot selection.
- Highly rated experience – Consistently praised for its layout, character, and overall playing experience.
Signature Holes
Hole 17 – Par 5, “Devil’s Delight” - The par-5 17th is El Campeón’s most famous hole and a true test of strategy. This dramatic double dogleg requires precise positioning from the tee to navigate around a tree that stands directly in the fairway. A bold second shot must then carry bunkers and water to reach a sloping green, creating a thrilling risk-reward opportunity late in the round.
