Best golf courses in Spain

Spain has long been a favoured destination for British holidaymakers and it’s no secret why with a hot climate, beautiful beaches and a delightful culture. Spain also has some of the finest golf courses on the continent having already hosted plenty of tour events and even the Ryder Cup. We have handpicked a ‘Quick 9’ from a pick of the best golf courses in Spain.

Real Club Valderrama

Valderrama was host to one of the greatest Ryder Cup matches of all time back in 1997. Seve Ballesteros’ European Team rushed to a 5-point lead heading into the Sunday singles. The US team rallied back but Team Europe held out. The course today still is up to tour standard frequently hosting professional events and is an absolute must when in the Costa del Sol.

Finca Cortesin Golf Club

No short of length, the Finca Cortesin is a real challenge testified by a variety of touring professionals having played host to the Volvo World Match Play Championship for three years. Each hole varies challenging all parts of your game and is in impeccable condition. Finca Cortesin is frequently referred to as “the course to play” in the Costa del Sol and is well up there with Valderrama.

Campo de Golf El Saler

Set in a stunning nature reserve, Campo de Golf El Saler is an absolute treat. The highly accredited par-72 has also played host to a variety of tour events and is an annual venue of the European Tour Qualifying School. The surroundings are varied ranging from beach links to areas of typical Mediterranean forest.

Golf Santander

Amazingly constructed for staff of the third largest bank in Europe, Golf Santander is rich in character designed partly by one of the game’s most charismatic figures, Seve Ballesteros. Although very tough and long, Santander is a true test of golf and playable for all abilities. Despite being in its early years, the course is definitely one to look out for and don’t be surprised if the European Tour come knocking very soon.

La Reserva Golf Club, Sotogrande

La Reserva is another beauty based in the golfing paradise of the Costa del Sol. Only 13 years young, the Sotogrande course is already maturing into one of Spain’s finest and has been tipped to begin hosting more national and international events. Located in between two valleys, La Reserva offers stunning views and is reasonably generous off the fairways, allowing you to open your shoulders and let the driver rip!

La Manga Golf Club, West Course

Part of a collection of three courses at La Manga, the West Course is definitely the stand out offering a very well-manicured layout and an incredible variation of holes. None are much better than the grandstand finish at the 18th. After a small walk up to the top of a mountain, expect to be greeted by spectacular views of the resort with the sea in the distance.

PGA Catalunya, Stadium Course

Built by the European Tour to rival the PGA Tour’s Sawgrass course, designers spent 10 years carefully plotting out one of the best golf courses in Spain. Having already hosted several European Tour events, the Stadium Course was a contender for the 2022 Ryder Cup but narrowly missed out. The course is always in immaculate condition and places PGA Catalunya right up there with the very best Spanish golf courses.

Real Club Sevilla Golf

Located in Seville, this course is one that will stick in your memory for a long time. Delicately pretty, the luscious fairways and stunning surroundings almost give a feel of playing golf in a garden. Having played host to the Open d’Espana, Sevilla is a testing layout. Designed by one of Spain’s finest ever golfers, Jose Maria Olazabal, all 18 holes have a real Spanish feel and there’s certainly nothing wrong with that…

Golf Son Gual Mallorca

Son Gual has regularly been voted as one of the best courses in the Balearic Islands and you’ll see why. Located in Mallorca, the captivating design is just as great in length as it is beauty. Measuring 7,250 yards from the back markers, Son Gual will test your game but with some signature holes you will not go home disappointed.
