Pinehurst No. 2 course overview
Widely considered to be Donald Ross’ greatest design of his 400 plus courses, Pinehurst No. 2 is the crowning jewel at Pinehurst Resort. From its opening in 1907 until he died in 1948, Ross was constantly tweaking and improving upon his masterpiece.
The most notable feature is the crowned and undulating greens, widely considered to be some of the best in the world. A long layout at 7588 yards from the ‘U.S. Open tees’ but not considered a difficult driving course, great approach-play and a solid short game are needed to tackle these greens and to score well.
Pinehurst No. 2 has deservingly hosted multiple U.S. Opens (the late Payne Stewart’s victory in 1999 being one of the most remembered) and a significant number of other professional and amateur tournaments throughout the years. A renovation in 2010 by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw restored the strategic and natural elements that Ross originally envisioned for the course. Pinehurst No.2 is simply a ‘must-play’ for all.
The 18th on Pinehurst No. 2 is probably the most iconic on the golf course. A long par-4 played slightly uphill to an elevated green. From the tee, you either play short of the fairway crest which leaves a long, blind approach or carry to the top of the hill and are left with a short iron into the green. It’s a great finish, made even more so by the famous statue of the late Payne Stewart immortalizing the fist-pump he gave as he holed the winning putt in the 1999 U.S. Open.
