Tain Golf Club overview

Tain Golf Club was formed in 1899 when a few locals invited legendary Old Tom Morris to come and design a golf course on the links land on the south side of the Dornoch Firth. Originally a 15-hole golf course it was developed a few years later by John Sutherland into an 18-hole course.

Often overlooked in favor of the bigger names, visiting golfers will likely have an enjoyable round despite not being played directly on the oceanfront. Visitors will also find a modest clubhouse directly behind the 18th green where food & beverages are served as well as an adjoining pro shop.

Tain Golf Club is a welcoming club and can be considered a great way to kick-off a golf tour in the north of Scotland, or as a place to escape the crowds and get off the beaten path.

Tain Golf Course overview

Tain Golf Club is not the longest of courses, measuring just over 6400-yards from the medal tees, therefore accuracy is more important than distance, particularly with many of the longer holes lined with gorse. The par-70 makes the best use of the available land which has resulted in a non-traditional links layout with holes going in different directions which adds to the sense of variety including back-to-back par 3’s on the 16th & 17th holes.

Signature Holes

Highlights include the par-4 11th which requires a blind approach shot to a green protected by two large sand dunes and the par-4 2nd where the Aldie Burn winds its way across the fairway in front of the green, waiting to catch any under-hit approach shots.

Did You Know?

Tain was originally named St. Duthus Golf Club, named after the patron saint of the town. It was only in 1911 after acquiring a new clubhouse that the course changed its name to Tain Golf Club.
