The Lodge at Sea Island

The Lodge at Sea Island overview

The Lodge at Sea Island Resort is modelled on an English-style manor house, with rich wood furnishings and exposed beams, the 43 room Lodge is the perfect Forbes five-star hideaway that includes a unique 24-hour personal butler service. Adjacent to The Lodge you find the Seaside and Plantation Courses (home each year to the PGA TOUR’s RSM Classic), with the third course at Sea Island, The Retreat just 1.5 miles down the road.

Excellent dining, spa facilities, and plenty of leisure activities are available. Not to mention the vast putting green at the back of the property which overlooks the ocean and is perfect for a pre-dinner competition (and drink) with friends.

Golf Courses

There are three courses onsite at Sea Island; the Seaside Course, Plantation Course, and the Retreat Course. In 1929, the famed architects Harry S. Colt and Charles Alison designed the Seaside Course, in recent years Tom Fazio has also helped to update and renovate this spectacular layout.

The Seaside Course is an ocean-side links that combines a beautiful natural setting with a golf course that is both challenging and fun. Tidal creeks, salt marshes, manicured fairways, sweeping dunes, and the Atlantic Ocean create a true Scottish links experience, which plays fast and firm. Regularly ranked among the top 100 courses in the United States, Seaside is the number one course on property and along with the Plantation Course, it is the home of the PGA TOUR’s RSM Classic.

Originally a nine-hole course inspired by Walter Travis in 1928, the Plantation Course has had several designers work on its layout. Rees Jones in 1998 and more recently the Love brothers (Davis and Mark) completed a year-long project at the end of 2019. Rees Jones called this course a ‘parkland by the sea’ because of its amazing combination of views of the Atlantic Ocean and the spectacular inland scenery.

The Retreat Course at Sea Island was re-designed by touring professional Davis Love III and his brother in 2001. They added some length to the back tees but also widened the fairways to give players a little more freedom to swing. Whilst the course is relatively flat, it is beautifully defined by the large pine trees and strategic bunkering. The Retreat Course might not be the most famous of the three at Sea Island, but it is very playable and a great course on which to start your golf vacation at Sea Island.
