The accessible island in the middle of the Indian Ocean is a total paradise with some of the most picturesque golf courses in the world. But what are the best golf courses in Mauritius?

With many of the layouts just under 10 years old, it would be easy to dismiss the standard of golf. Do not be fooled though, in a short period Mauritius has established itself on the world golfing stage with the European Tour already visiting annually.

Here are the very best golf courses in Mauritius…

Anahita Golf Club

The layout was built to a USGA standard nearly 10 years ago by South African golfing stalwart Ernie Els. Having hosted the AfrAsia Golf Masters for 5 years between 2010 and 2014, Anahita has already built a strong case as one of the best golf courses in Mauritius. 6 of the holes are played alongside the irrepressible Indian Ocean coastline with amazing vistas throughout the rest of the course.

Heritage Golf Club

Wide fairways and forgiving greens make Heritage look easy at first glance, but the sheer number of water hazards means your approach game needs to be precise. With five tee positions on each hole, the layout is accessible to all levels of golfers. The final hole is a grand finish with an elevated tee allowing for stunning views. Drive off to the left and try to hit the green in two on the par-5 before enjoying a refreshment in the venue’s wonderful clubhouse.

Tamarina Golf Course

A decade-old, Tamarina is perfectly located next to the mouth of the Rempart River as it approaches the Indian Ocean. The backdrop is just as spellbinding with views of the peaks of Trois Mamelles. Don’t be distracted for long though as the golf is just as good. The fairness of Tamarina is striking alongside a great variation of holes.

Avalon Golf & Country Club

With tea plantations in sight on the mountain slopes that surround Avalon, the layout has been described as a “golfing garden of Eden”. Small creeks and streams come into play throughout this tricky course which features 2 incredibly interesting short par 4’s. Both the 4th and 17th are a classic risk and reward type holes with water coming in to play on both. Get it right on these two teasers and a birdie could be on the cards!

Legend Course at Constance Belle Mare Plage

Set in a former hunting preserve, the natural landscape at Constance Belle Mare Plage is something to behold. Much like many of the courses in Mauritius, water comes into play throughout. The 17th hole is our favourite on the island. The spectacular par-3 plays across a small arm of the Indian Ocean on the seafront at Bras Requin Bay to a tough green and really will take your breath away.

Le Paradis Golf Club

Set across a narrow peninsula, Le Paradis well and truly lives up to its name and is quite simply golfing heaven. The layout takes in the blue water of the bay next to it as well as the grand Morne Mountains. The opening nine ends with a tricky par-4 with the bay lurking all the way down the right-hand side and the green built into the marina. The back 9 then really takes off with some incredible holes to enjoy amongst a utopian setting.

Mont Choisy le Golf

Mont Choisy boasts arguably the best golfing facilities on the whole of the island. Situated in the north of Mauritius, the layout is set on a former sugar cane plantation and full of testing water features. Volcanic rock is also prominent throughout, next to the luscious rolling fairways. Don’t be fooled by the length of the track either, at 6,200 yards Mont Choisy will still prove a tough test.

Ile aux Cerfs

Designed by European golfing legend Bernhard Langer back in 2003, the German says he wanted to create “a golfing experience that truly arouses all the senses” and this course does exactly that. The setting for this tricky par-72 is idyllic with incredible white sandy beaches surrounding the layout.

Links Course at Constance Belle Mare Plage

The Links Course is the more accessible layout of the two at Constance Belle Mare Plage. This unique design also features plenty of water hazards to avoid with a spectacular closing hole alongside the waters of Bras Requin Bay. Co-designer Peter Alliss regularly retreats here and it’s no secret why with unparalleled views and a top-end resort nearby.
