Hesketh Golf Course

18 holes, 72 par, 6649 yards. Links / Woodland.

Established in 1885, The Hesketh is the oldest club in Southport and is regularly chosen for Final Qualifying when The Open arrives across town at Royal Birkdale. Part links and part parkland, the distinctive challenge of the course is that half of the holes meander through tall sand dunes, while the other half border the Ribble estuary. Some of the best holes lie between the sandhills and the clubhouse, particularly the 18th, an impressive, lengthy finishing hole.

Hillside

18 holes, 72 par, 6850 yards. Links.

Hillside Golf Course is a fantastic example of a great links course. Set amongst large dunes and pine trees creating a beautiful course described by Greg Norman as having the best back nine holes in Britain. Strong winds coming in from the Irish Sea make for tricky approach shots to the more sheltered greens, and also give rise to some spectacular views along the coastline. Measuring at over 8,800-yards in total, this is truly a course that will test even the most advanced golfers, and is a must play for anyone in the region.

West Lancashire Golf Course

18 holes, 72 par, 7030 yards. Links.

Founded in 1873 and situated in natural seaside terrain, this great links course measures 6,862 yards with 11 of the holes measuring over 400 yards. West Lancashire is a course of contrasts with greens on plateaus and greens in hollows, areas of safety and shelter all set amongst a sea of rough and sandy wilderness. In 1976, four young professionals competed in their final Open qualifier here - Sandy Lyle, Nick Faldo, Bernard Langer and Ian Woosnam - all four were eventual US Masters winners.

Royal Liverpool Golf Course

18 holes, 72 par, 6909 yards. Links.

Built in 1869 on the edge of the Dee shores and against the backdrop of the distant Welsh hills, Royal Liverpool is a fine place to sense the history and traditions of the game and walk in the fairways of famous men. Home of the 2006 Open Championship, the course may at first appear to look flat and benign, but don't let this be deceiving as in recent years golf architect Donald Steel has been commissioned, with great success, to restore and elevate the course to modern championship standards.

Ormskirk Golf Course

18 holes, 70 par, 6357 yards. Parkland.

More than 100 years old, Ormskirk was laid out in the now peaceful west Lancashire countryside of Latham Park, although it was once the scene of some of the fiercest fighting throughout the English Civil Wars. Ormskirk is now known for its tight fairways, well guarded greens and water features, all of which conspire to provide a demanding but enjoyable round.
