- A fabulous place to stay and play golf and to enjoy terrific surroundings. Elegant and "nothing too much trouble"at Hotel and Golf Clubhouse.
We were fortunate to be offered an upgrade to a beautiful Suite as it was vacant for the two weeks and we were first - timers! Bigger than some peoples houses!
We had booked B&B but after a couple of days we changed to HB so that we ate in the Hotel Restaurant- more expensive than eating in the Clubhouse but a real treat. Our original plan to eat mostly in the Clubhouse would work better later in the year when the 20 minute stroll through the woods could be accomplished in daylight. Course excellent but a buggy is a sensible option for those,like us, of mature years.I suppose it would be nice for that to be included in the Golf package as the addition charge per day is Euros 40 (which I managed to have reduced to cover our 7 rounds to 32Euros per round) -still a hefty lump for a necessary requirement. Even with a buggy there is a lot of up and down walking so we got sufficient exercise!
The Palheiro Gardens are magical and open to residents of the Hotel at all times.
We did not avail ourselves of the Spa or tennis or other facilities which would be more available in later months.
An ideal venue for people who are looking for gracious living and who are prepared to pay for the privilege. We would not hesitate to return (as so many people do).
We never really got to the bottom of what is the system for "Service charge"- the Hotel Website says Service is included generally but on going to pay the bill it appeared that it was not-we made a good contribution which was accepted with gratitude but it always leaves you with the question as to whether you have correctly rewarded what was exceptional service . English was spoken well throughout (as well as German, Dutch, French etc.,)The location is a 20 Euro Taxi ride from Funchal but there are two shuttle services down and back provided by the Hotel (ride has to be booked and limited availability). Diligent investigation gives Bus service availabilty and Hotel staff will help to plan walks etc.,
