Play the best golf courses in England

England is a golfer's paradise, with a vast array of stunning golf courses scattered throughout the country, including a long list of Open Championship, Ryder Cup, and DP World Tour (European Tour) venues.

Well renowned for its traditional, challenging, and well-designed layouts, England boasts some of the most topographically diverse golf in the world across its 1,800 registered golf courses, which is the largest number of courses anywhere in Europe.

There are a wide variety of course types to choose from, including parkland, heathland, woodland, and of course, magnificent links courses. So, whether you're a seasoned pro or a beginner, England's best golf courses below offer a range of challenges and breathtaking scenery that make them truly unforgettable.

  • Royal Birkdale – a 10-time Open venue with incredible history and pedigree, Royal Birkdale is top of the pile when it comes to golf in England. Coastal winds, copious pot bunkers and run-off greens are amongst the challenge that this remarkable layout possesses.
  • Royal St George’s – like Royal Birkdale, St George’s is a multiple-time Open host and dates back well over 100 years. It is one of the most natural courses in the country and no two holes are the same, which makes it incredibly enjoyable to play.
  • Royal Lytham & St Anne’s – situated on the north side of England’s Golf Coast, in Blackpool, Royal Lytham is fantastic layout and a little bit more inland than most classic links. It is tough but fair and pairs well with the other courses along the prestigious coastline.
  • Woodhall Spa – one of the very best heathland courses in the world, Woodhall Spa is a 36-hole golf club and the home of England Golf. It is set in the glorious Lincolnshire countryside with natural undulations, plenty of heather, and PROPER bunkers.
  • Royal Cinque Ports – located on the same stretch of coastline as Royal St George’s and Prince’s, Royal Cinque Ports (Deal) is classic links course that dates back to 1892. It has previously held The Open and has one of the toughest, most enjoyable back nines in the country.
  • Royal Liverpool – perhaps most famous for the Open Championships in which Tiger (2006) and Rory (2015) won the Claret Jug, Royal Liverpool is another exceptional layout on this list. It is often referred to as Hoylake and with recent development work undertaken, the course is better than ever.
  • Hillside – as with Deal, Hillside is best known for having one of the best back nines in England. It is a former British Masters and English Open host, and when paired with its neighbouring courses of Birkdale and South & Ainsdale, makes one of the best tours in the UK.

In conclusion, England is home to some of the world's most iconic and beautiful golf courses. From the windswept links courses of the coast to the rolling hills and heathland of the countryside, there is a course to suit every golfer's preference. Whether you're seeking a challenge or simply want to soak in the stunning views, England's array of layouts provides an unparalleled experience for golfers of all levels.

Some of our best golf resorts in England include:

The Belfry Situated in 550-acres of stunning Warwickshire countryside, The Belfry needs very little introduction. Its famous Brabazon Course is a four-time Ryder Cup host, and with two other excellent courses on-site, a range of restaurants and bars, and spa/leisure activities, this is a must-visit resort in England.

Forest of Arden Located just down the road from The Belfry, Forest of Arden is another exceptional multi-course golf resort. The Arden Course is a former European Tour host, and the on-site Delta by Marriott Hotel provides everything guests will need for a first-class stay.

East Sussex National With 36-holes in 1,100 acres of tranquil countryside, East Sussex National remains one of our best-sellers. The two courses are both of a similarly high standard, and the on-site facilities are nothing short of excellent, particularly their AA two-rosette restaurant – The Pavillion.

Belton Woods A great lakeside golf resort for both small and large groups, Belton Woods is a real fan favourite, and for good reason. The hotel is kept to a modern four-star standard and the facilities are extensive, with a state-of-the-art Techno Gym, fitness room, squash court, indoor pool, sauna, steam room, and Jacuzzi.

Old Thorns Located in Hampshire, the great Old Thorns is a former 17th century farmhouse turned golf resort. The on-site course (a parkland/moorland mix) was designed by the late, great Peter Alliss, and the hotel has everything you need for a peaceful countryside retreat.

Experience world-leading golf destinations

England is home to some of the most iconic and historic golf courses in the world, and with that comes some incredible golf destinations. From the tranquil shores of the Kent coastline to the livelier locations of Bournemouth and Birmingham, we include just a few of England’s best golf destinations below:

Southport Located at the heart of England’s Golf Coast (North West England), which runs from Blackpool down to Liverpool, the town of Southport is one of the leading golf destinations in the world. Within a 5 minute drive of the town centre, golfers can travel to the likes of Royal Birkdale, Hillside, and Southport & Ainsdale – three fantastic, but very different links courses.

Slightly further away sits two other Open Championship venues in Royal Lytham and Royal Liverpool, with some other lesser-known top 100 layouts such as West Lancs, Wallasey, and Formby also within easy driving distance. Add to this a great nightlife and Southport ticks every box.

Bournemouth The popular seaside town of Bournemouth makes for one of our most popular golf tour destinations. The town centre is packed with restaurants, bars, and clubs, and the long sandy beach is perfect for a day off the course.

On the course, Bournemouth offers a string of exceptional layouts ranked within England’s top 100 courses. Broadstone, Parkstone, Ferndown, and Isle of Purbeck are all Heathland classics, with the woodland layout at Remedy Oak also making a fine addition to any golf tour.

Kent Located in the southeast of England, Kent is home to some of the most picturesque golf courses in the country. The 15-time Open Championship venue of Royal St. George's is the pick of the bunch and is often regarded as the best courses in England. The course is set on the Kent coastline in Sandwich Bay and features challenging bunkers, rolling fairways, and undulating greens.

Also idyllically situated along the Bay sits Prince’s Golf Club and Royal Cinque Ports. Both are also former Open venues in their own right and when combined with St George’s, creates one of the best golf tours in the UK.

Birmingham area Birmingham is a bustling city in the heart of England that is home to some of the country's most historic layouts. The most famous in the area is located at The Belfry, which has hosted multiple Ryder Cups and is regarded as one of the best golf resorts in Europe. The resort features three championship courses, including the world-renowned Brabazon course, as well as luxurious accommodation options, spa facilities, and restaurants.

Other notable courses in the area include Forest of Arden golf resort, which has hosted numerous European Tour events. Elsewhere on-site at the resort, guests can enjoy a hassle-free stay with another 18-hole course and excellent hotel facilities. In addition to its golf courses, Birmingham has a range of cultural attractions, including the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, the Symphony Hall, and the Bullring Shopping Center. Plus, you’ll struggle to find many cities with better nightlife!

Devon/Cornwall There is nothing better than heading down to the seaside in either Devon or Cornwall, particularly when the two counties have such a vast array of first-class golf courses and resorts. For great links, then the northern coastline provides incredibly diverse and dramatic landscapes. St Enodoc, Saunton, Trevose, and Royal North Devon are just a few of the great layouts to visit when you’re looking to enjoy a memorable break in this part of the world.

Away from the coast, we’d highly recommend the stay & play golf resorts of St Mellion, The Ashbury, and The Dartmouth Hotel, Golf & Spa.
