It’s safe to say I am not an avid golfer; I do enjoy the occasional session at the driving range and have been known to play at a 9 hole pitch and putt at a course in Rickmansworth, but I definitely do not own a set of golf clubs or hit the fairways every weekend. However I think working at the Golf LIVE event on the Golfbreaks.com exhibition stand on 20th and 21st May might have sparked the beginning of an interest...
Based at the beautiful London Golf Club, the whole place was completely transformed into a grand event, with queues stretching to the car park. I was based in the ‘hub’, which was located right in the centre and it was where I got to witness all the hype around the sport. There were plenty of stands with some of the best golf courses in the UK showcasing what they had to offer; Celtic Manor had a particularly impressive stand where they had made a miniature golf hole for visitors to have a go and see if they could get a hole in one. There were also some impressive golf apparel stands, with some outfits that would even challenge Ian Poulter’s attire.

The weather was perfect; the clear blue skies and hot sunshine meant there were queues of people waiting to try some of the latest top of the range clubs along the driving range. As you can see I had a go myself with a 7 iron and did not get very far…
One of the best things I saw over the 2 days was the world champion Longest Driver Joe Miller; with a record of 474 yards it was an exciting show to watch. His athleticism and ability to drive 300 yards with a putter left the crowd and even myself amazed with his strength.
I was behind the bar at our impressive Golfbreaks.com stand serving drinks to golfers who signed up for our competitions we had running over the 3 days. I had a lot of fun and was kept busy chatting to people from all walks of life who were just passionate about golf. There were even a few “non golfing” celebrities who passed by, including Brendan Cole from Strictly Come Dancing.
I left Kent not only feeling utterly exhausted after the enjoyable two days, but also with the mindset that maybe I should give golf a try, but from the looks of my performance on the driving range, I think I have a lot to learn…
