Ardglass Golf Club Review

by Steve Cullum 14. March 2011 20:24

A picturesque course where 12 of the 18 holes offer scenic views of the Northern Irish Coastline, Ardglass has been mentioned amongst the top 10 most stunning links courses in the world.

Upon arrival it is easy to see why, with a converted 13th century castle as the clubhouse providing a fitting backdrop for what is arguably one of the most daunting first tee shots in links golf.  With a crevasse of rocky Co. Down coastline to carry, straying off line to the left will leave your ball swimming in the Irish Sea; there is no room for error here.

The breathtaking scenery continues throughout the course, with the second tee shot set at the top of a steep cliff-face. This hole, along with many others on the course, would quite easily be the signature hole at any other, with the Mourne Mountains in the distance and the dramatic shoreline providing the perfect surroundings.

The Par 3 Second Hole:

As always on a links course the elements can be your worst enemy, with the wind blowing straight off the Irish Sea wreaking havoc with anything hit high. The well-manicured greens and fairways provide some very enjoyable golfing conditions.

Another spectacular stretch occurs along the par 5 11th and par 3 12th, with the 11th lying on a low stretch of land below a cliff-face and the 12th providing a challenge from a highly elevated tee tumbling down to a shoreline green, with a perilous stretch of the Irish Sea threatening on the right.

The Par 5 Eleventh Hole:

The 18th provides a great finishing hole, rolling down to the castle; a well-hit drive can find the green. The clubhouse itself is full of character as well, with the 13th century shield found on site being a particular point of interest.

With a clubhouse seeped in heritage and a striking golf course to match, it’s no wonder this “hidden gem” is one of many peoples favourites, including Rory McIlroy, who recently mentioned it as his favourite course in Northern Ireland.

Whether its challenging links golf or stunning scenery you are after, Ardglass Golf Club will deliver and more, I would definitely recommend a visit to this Northern Irish beauty.
