Sunbury Golf Club Review

by Gareth Ilbery 21. December 2010 20:19

Sunbury Golf Club is located just outside Staines, easily reached from both the M25 and the M3. It’s not the longest course by any means, but is an ideal place to work on your game, and boy does my game need work!

The course was in pretty good condition considering the weather recently, and with the wind up it was quite challenging on a number of the holes. And despite being busy, as you would expect the weekend after the Ryder Cup, the pace of play was generally pretty good.

The course has a number of interesting holes, particularly the 6th and 8th which have a large lake running all the way down the right side. When your bad shot is a slice (or “power fade” as I prefer to call it) and the wind is coming in off the left, there are no prizes for guessing where my tee shot ended up.

There are quite a few par 3s on the course, varying from 173 yards right down to around 100 yards. These are some of the best holes, as the greens are inevitably well guarded and you need a good tee shot to make par.
Despite my short game being more Mahan than McDowell, I still managed to play to handicap. If you’re a mid or a low handicap golfer, playing here should be a great boost to the ego, as you should easily be able to play under your handicap. For the higher handicapper, this is a great alternative to going to the range as a way to work on your game, as it is a very fair challenge.
