Ailsa Course at Turnberry Resort Details

    Golf at Turnberry

There are two fantastic links courses to be played at Turnberry Golf Club. The Ailsa course has hosted The Open numerous times, perhaps most famously the "Duel in the Sun" in 1977, and the Kintyre course also has a great layout. After undergoing some drastic, yet sympathetic improvements by Martin Ebert, the Ailsa Course was reopened for play in June 2016. Widely considered as one of the best courses in the world, the Ailsa simply must feature in your Ayrshire golf trip.

    Ailsa Course at Turnberry Resort

    18 holes, 71 par, 6474 yards. Links.

The Ailsa Turnbery Golf Course hosted the resort's first Open Championship in 1977. The competition saw an international duel between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson as they went head-to-head to produce one of the greatest final days in Open history. Around this course, guests will find stunning natural beauty with exceptional coastal views – but do not let its beauty fool you, as its home to some of the most difficult holes in golf, notably the long par 3 ninth. This Turnberry golf course has long been considered as one of the best in the world so it's no wonder that it was choice to re-host the Open Championship in 2009.

    Dislike slow play and
The Ailsa course has been redesigned in places since my last visit and although it is a brave man who looks to change the signature hole it actually looks fantastic. The outward nine are great, the first hole is a bit more interesting than its previous incarnation. The holes around the lighthouse are stunning. My issue with the design is that a few too many of the inward nine holes are a bit dull especially those that turn inland. Condition of the course was good - fairways were cut very short so anything down the middle ran on a long way so the course didnt feel particularly long. Its a nice touch having a staff member controling access to the half-way house which is in a fantastic lighthouse renovation which keeps distance between the playing groups. I'd come back.
